Review – Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (2017 PS4 JPN)

After I got my PC Engine(Japanese Turbografx 16) just about 2 years ago I became a huge fan of the Ys series. Ys Book 1 & 2(1989) and Ys IV: Dawn of Ys(1993) for the PC Engine/Turbografx 16 are action-rpg games that rival some of the best games of their era such as the Final Fantasy and Zelda games. I reviewed those also on this site for those interested.
After all this time I was pretty hyped to see that a new main series Ys game was being made. Ys VIII is obviously the eight game in the series but I missed Ys 5, 6 and 7 and will go play those soon.
I played the Ys IV remake “Memories of Celceta” on the Vita and I liked it a lot except that I feel like they butchered the great original story of the PC Engine original.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana was also released on the Vita in Japan in 2016 but more recently the game was released on the PS4 but also just in Japan.
I speak fluent Japanese (N2/N1 level) so i thought I would give Ys VIII a go and review it for English speakers before it releases internationally 12th of September 2017.

Phantasy Star IV(1993 Sega Mega/Genesis)

I did a Phantasy Star 1 review the other day. I found it revolutionary but a bit dated, so also check that out if you are interested. The reason of I got into Phantasy Star(PS) at all is because of a friend who grew up with the Sega Mega and insisted that Phantasy Star IV was just as good or even better than other JRPG greats like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger.
Alright, I’ll try it…… And even though I was told by many that I did not need to play any of the other PS games to enjoy PSIV I am so happy I did!
I played PS1 and PS2 beforehand and saw that PSIV was the final chapter or climax for the story of the Phantasy Star Universe and it was great! Not only was the interwoven story really good but the gameplay and presentation of PSIV are at an A+ level! Continue reading Phantasy Star IV(1993 Sega Mega/Genesis)

Phantasy Star (1987 Sega Master System)

Cousin gaming continues grinding through the Sega Master System library! This time i played Sega’s answer to Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Phantasy Star was a must get game at the time, a game that probably moved more Sega Master System consoles than any other game on the system.  8-bit rpg’s tend to not age very well though, but let’s take a look at how Phantasy Star holds up 28 years later. Terranigma (1995 SNES)

Being a huge Final Fantasy and JRPG fan I was always trying to find similar games on whatever system possible. A friend of mine insisted a while back that Terranigma is the best RPG on the SNES, even better than Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI (III). Well… I couldn’t believe that, at least not before I tried the game. So I tried it! And played it! In both English and Japanese, and now I am finally reviewing it 🙂
