Top 10 Sega Master System Games

After playing the Sega Master System steadily for the last 2 years we feel that we are finally ready to give you a top 10 list for the system. Arguably more powerful than the NES, the Master System still wasn’t able to generate the same popularity as the NES except maybe in Europe and Brazil where it was relevant way into the early 90’s.
Although heavily beaten by the NES the Sega Master System still has plenty of games worth playing.
These are our 10 favorite:

Golvellius: Valley of Doom (Sega Master System 1988)

I return to the Master System once again and i have been looking forward to playing this game for a while. Golvellius is an action-adventure game developed by Compile for the MSX in 1987 and then reprogrammed and published by Sega on the Sega Master System in 1988. Compile went bankrupt in the early 2000s but they made some quality titles in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. They created Puyo Puyo, a puzzle game that became vastly popular around the globe. They also created some very solid shooters like Gunhed(Blazing Lazers),  the Aleste series and the Spriggan games.
Out of the bunch the best game developed by Compile might be Golvellius, a game that plays a lot like the original Zelda but it is so much more than just that.

Time Soldiers (Sega Master System 1987)

Let’s back up a bit and look up some co-op games for the Master System. First we decided to take a look at Time Soldiers, a run and gun game similar to Ikari Warriors and Shock Troopers. The Master System was not exactly famous for good cover art, in fact it was quite the opposite. It can’t be much worse than Ikari Warriors! Can it?

Dynamite Dux (1989 Sega Master System)

Hello and welcome to another review! This time we take on Dynamite Dux! Why? Well, I am a big fan of the Happy Console Gamer and his YouTube channel and it has become pretty infamous that he really hates this game. As a child he wanted to spend his 90 hard earned Canadian Dollars on something special, something he could immerse in and fall in love with. I think it is safe to say that he didn’t get what he wanted. I love listening to that just as much as any of you but I still felt I had to check out what the fuzz is about. I played Dynamite Dux and I found it to be OK… An OK game with much more potential than the final product actually shows. Continue reading Dynamite Dux (1989 Sega Master System)

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap/Dragon’s Curse (1989/1991 SMS/Turbografx16 )

A full remake for Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap (Sega Master System) or Dragon’s Curse (Turbografx16) was just announced on E3 last week so thought it was appropriate to give the original a shot since it is a very well received and heralded game. I played the Turbografx16 version till’ the end and big parts of the Master System version but to be honest i wasn’t very impressed.
