Back to some Master System before i go back to Japan next week and get my PC Engine (Turbografx-16). This time i decided to give another platformer a go, Land of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse. There were a lot of Disney games made for Sega consoles and the Illusion series was definitely a highlight among the bunch. Land of Illusion is the second game in the Illusion series after Castle of Illusion. Castle of Illusion as you may know was also released on the Genesis as well as the Master System and while the two version are quite different i felt that Land of Illusion was more special to the Master System so it felt right to review that one even though Land of Illusion was also released on the Sega Game Gear later and was nearly identical to the Master System version as it was with many of the later Master System titles (like i explained in the Master of Darkness review). Batman (1989 NES)
A buttload of Batman games have been released over the years, but this Batman game from Sunsoft on the NES is the real deal, rising from the pile of crap that are the rest of the Batman games from this and the adjacent video game generations, and showing you how quality franchise games should be made.
Phantasy Star (1987 Sega Master System)
Cousin gaming continues grinding through the Sega Master System library! This time i played Sega’s answer to Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Phantasy Star was a must get game at the time, a game that probably moved more Sega Master System consoles than any other game on the system. 8-bit rpg’s tend to not age very well though, but let’s take a look at how Phantasy Star holds up 28 years later. Master of Darkness (1992 Sega Master System)
The Sega Master System lived way beyond what was considered normal. Even in 1993, 4 years after the Sega Mega Drive debuted in Japan the Sega Master System was still getting solid releases. There are two main reasons for this. First is that the Sega Master System still had a big fanbase that never upgraded to the Mega Drive in Europe(France especially) and Brazil for god knows what reason. Second reason is that the Sega Game Gear was at its peak at the time and the Game Gear is basically a portable Master System so it was easy and cheap to make many games for both systems. Master of Darkness was one of those games, a 1890’s horror story that takes place in London and borrows heavily from the Castlevania franchise which i am a big fan of so i had to try it out.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World (1986 Sega Master System)
The Sega Master System makes it’s debut to Cousin Gaming! By coincidence i got my hands on a Sega Master System for the first time but i have to admit that before now i had never ever played a Sega Master System game (except some on the Game Gear). I looked up what games are the best ones on the system, got myself an everdrive and started with a game starring what is considered the former mascot of Sega. It is one the most talked about game that was exclusive to the system, Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Let’s see how it goes!

Golden Axe (1989 Sega MD/Genenis)
Golden Axe for the Mega Drive/Genesis was a godsend when it finally was ported from the arcades to the comfort of your own home. Or so i´ve heard since being from freaking Iceland we never had any arcades and got all games like a year later than everyone else…. Anyway i never played Golden Axe until me and of course my cousin decided to pick it up last month since it is a co-op beat’em up. We had always stayed away from the game because of its dated graphics but we are in the process of making a Sega MD top 10 co-op games list so of course we had to play it since its status in the retro gaming is somewhat legendary.
